As part of the World Environment Day 2024 celebration, Uganda Martyrs University, in partnership with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and others, launched the Equatorial Green Belt Initiative in Uganda.
The project aims to establish a vibrant green corridor along the equator from Kayabwe to Kasese, fortifying environmental preservation, promoting sustainable agriculture, and encouraging reforestation and biodiversity conservation.
The launch also had a tree planting activity and over the next years, the initiative plans to plant 4 million trees, which will sequester 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually.
This project represents Uganda’s commitment to climate action and environmental stewardship by creating this green corridor, we will enhance carbon capture and support sustainable livelihoods.
The launch event brought together stakeholders to celebrate the commencement of this transformative endeavor for Uganda.
