By: Jente Broeckx | International Business and Project Manager | VITO.

The KLIMPALA project has the ambitious goal of developing a Climate Platform for Adaptation in the African Agricultural Sector. The project is being led by a consortium of partners including VITO, ACMAD, KPMG, KENTER, and OVO, with support from the Government of Flanders in Belgium.

At the heart of the KLIMPALA project is the CLIMTAG tool – a web-based dashboard that provides customized climate information and data-driven insights to stakeholders in the African agro-sector. CLIMTAG offers a wealth of tailored agro-climate indicators that are invaluable for assessing climate impacts and planning effective adaptation strategies.

The CLIMTAG tool is being scaled up and expanded to include all African countries. This involves bringing the tool to the attention of key stakeholders at the national, subnational, and local levels, such as national authorities, agricultural experts, and local farmers. The goal is to empower these groups with the climate data and insights they need to make informed decisions and build resilience in the face of a changing climate.

Beyond the core CLIMTAG service, the project team has also been working to further enhance the tool’s capabilities. This includes the addition of a seasonal forecasting module to help farmers plan their activities based on expected precipitation patterns. Crop suitability assessments and yield modelling functionalities have also been integrated to provide even more valuable information to users.

Ultimately, the success of the KLIMPALA project will be measured by the real-world impact it has on the African agricultural sector. We envision widespread awareness and ownership of climate adaptation challenges, the widespread adoption of data-driven decision-making by policymakers and farmers, and ultimately, increased sustainable yields and resilient livelihoods for smallholder farmers across the continent.

I encourage you to watch the KLIMPALA VIDEO to learn more about this inspiring project and the work being done to combat climate change in Africa. Together, we can build a more sustainable and resilient future for all. For Details.
