The air was electric with anticipation as the AYuTe Challenge UG Awards Gala unfolded, a vibrant celebration of innovation in Ugandan agriculture. This year, the spotlight shone brightly on the remarkable achievements of agri-tech entrepreneurs who took centre stage.

From a pool of 261 submissions, 15 talented innovators vied for a share of UGX 112,000,000, each with a vision to transform the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

The evening was marked by heartfelt stories of perseverance and innovation. Nakalema Assumpta captured the Grand Prize of UGX 50,000,000 for her groundbreaking Solar Egg Incubator. Her invention promises to revolutionize poultry farming by ensuring optimal conditions for egg incubation, making the process more efficient and reliable for farmers.

In the spirit of celebration, Uwera Angel was recognized as the First Runner-Up, taking home UGX 25,000,000 for her MAK Agrometer, a tool designed to enhance precision in farming.

The Second Runner-Up, Olivia Nakiwanuka, also made waves with her innovative Axis Solar, which optimizes energy use in agriculture by utilizing solar technology, earning an award of UGX 10,000,000.

William Matovu, Country Director Heifer International Uganda giving his speech

William Matovu, the Country Director of Heifer International Uganda, encapsulated the night’s essence: “We are witnessing a shift where young women are leading the charge in transforming the agriculture sector. Our vision with AYuTe is clear—empowering young entrepreneurs to revolutionize agriculture across Africa.”

This event is a testament to the potential of young innovators, especially women, to drive change in a sector that feeds nations. With 60% of the world’s arable land in Africa, the future looks promising. If technology can meet these challenges, we might just see the dawn of a new era in food security and job creation.

As the evening drew to a close, the message was clear: the journey of these women in agri-tech has only just begun, and with their innovations, they are poised to lead Uganda toward a sustainable agricultural future.
